POSITION DESCRIPTION AN D DUTIES

 

 


Hunter College High School , a grade 7-12 school for intellectually gifted students, is seeking a full-time High School Guidance Counselor for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


• Meeting with students to explains and introduce the services that school counselors can provide.
• Scheduling appointments with students to discuss challenges the students may be facing, or to assist a student with a problem in the school or in other aspects of his or her life.
• Meeting individually with students and families to provide information and guidance through the admissions and financial aid process.
• Being the point of contact for collecting, analyzing and disseminating important information affecting college counseling services.
• Teaching classes on social development, transition issues, and components of college applications process or other relevant topics.
• Meeting with parents and other professionals in the student’s life to coordinate services and make referrals to outside professionals and agencies.
• Responding to crisis or emergency situations involving students.
• Maintaining accurate records as per school and New York State Education Department policies.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

 


• Master’s degree required for appointment.
• One to three years of experience in college admissions and previous work with gifted and talented students or school guidance counseling preferred.
• New York State certification as a School Counselor required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
• Strong interpersonal, effective listening, problem solving, planning, prioritizing, organization, analytical, multi-tasking, negotiation and public speaking skills needed in the performance of all essential job functions.
• PC literacy and computer software knowledge with an emphasis on the Internet and Naviance application preferred.

The Hunter College Campus Schools (HCCS) seeks qualified candidates for Principal of the Hunter College High School. The HCCS are among the nation’s oldest centers for educating the intellectually gifted and serve a student body that is racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse. The Principal reports to, and is supervised by, the Director of the HCCS.


Qualified individuals should have the educational background, experience, and professional skills necessary to strengthen the international reputation of the HCCS High School as an institution that demonstrates best practices in education for intellectually gifted students.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

 


Experience as a leader in secondary education; ability to communicate clearly; proven management skills including supervision of teachers; experience with staff development; and experience in working with a variety of constituencies and people of diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and experience in theory and best practices in the 7-12 education of the intellectually gifted or comparable populations is preferable. A master’s degree or similar qualifications is essential. New York State certification in school administration/supervision or equivalent is preferred upon appointment but may be made available on a provisional basis.
