POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

 

 


This position has responsibility for the operation of a major administrative College activity, or difficult administrative and secretarial work in an office with College-wide responsibilities, or in an unusually complex academic department. May perform duties under the lower title, CUNY Office Assistant.

Persons in this position are accountable for rendering quality services in a respectful, courteous and professional manner. In the University’s multicultural environment, incumbents provide consistent assistance to everyone.

Assignment Level 1 - Under direction, with wide latitude for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, performs office or secretarial work in various units, following relevant departmental, College and University procedures. Typical duties are outlined below:

Supervision


• Develops and maintains efficient office procedures and methods and trains employees in their use.
• Makes arrangements for and may deliver specialized training.
• Interprets and applies operating procedures, rules and regulations within their assigned area(s).
• Establishes work priorities for a major unit of operation or of several small office engaged in routine clerical functions.
• Conducts job interviews to select subordinate office personnel.
• Supervises preparation of routine and specialized payrolls; reviews adjustments, reports inconsistencies.
• Supervises and coordinates the work of other employees.
• Coordinates the work of others for program activities and events, including registration, room arrangements, travel, fee collection, purchases, etc.


Budget & Transaction Processing


• Maintains departmental accounts and reconciles books.
• Assists in monitoring budgets and expenditures.
• Makes petty cash purchases and keeps records of accounts.
• Coordinates book lists for the department and forwards them to bookstores as directed by department chair/supervisor.
• Borrows and lends materials to and from other libraries, domestically and internationally, through the Interlibrary Loan area.


Communications and Customer Service


• Verifies students’ transcripts, recording grades and grade changes.
• Assists in scheduling special examinations for students.
• Assists in determining admission and advanced standing eligibility.
• Prepares class schedules; reserves rooms and equipment, and communicates assignments.
• Provides information regarding College, Department, and University regulations.


Documentation


• Expedites and prepares drafts for the Chair or Director, if authorized.
• Formats and types complex reports using typewriter, word processor, computer or other document preparation equipment.
• Prepares documents from diverse materials including academic, scientific or technical data.
• Drafts and edits written or visual material, including routine publications and catalogues; coordinates publication of the same.
• Drafts routine and complex correspondence.
• Prepares and coordinates the distribution of recruitment materials.
• May take dictation and/or transcribes notes, if necessary.

POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

 

 


With limited supervision, performs laboratory procedures requiring technical skills and independent judgment in nutritional biochemistry, anthropometry, food science and environmental and industrial hygiene sciences.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


• Preparation of materials for use in Nutrition and Food Science Laboratory undergraduate laboratories.
• Preparation of instrumentation appropriate to environmental Health/Industrial Hygiene laboratory courses (i.e. air quality measurement instrumentation as well as water and soil sampling equipment).
• Maintenance of analytical and general laboratory equipment, chemical and general storage areas.
• Maintenance of supplies inventory and orders for new materials.

Minimum Qualifications:
For appointment as a college laboratory technician, a person in addition to possessing knowledge and skills related to the discipline, shall be a high school graduate possessing one of the following sets of minimum additional qualifications: (a) four (4) years of work experience appropriate to the requirements of the department at a level of competence comparable to that indicated by apprenticeship in the skilled trades; OR (b) an associate degree and a minimum of two (2) years of experience of the type described above; OR (c) a bachelor’s degree in an area appropriate to the duties to be performed; OR (d) an appropriate combination of at least (4) years of education and work experience beyond high school.

Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in an area appropriate to the duties to be performed. Food chemistry and environmental instrumentation experience desirable. POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

 

 


Employees in this title provide various interpretation services for the College. These employees facilitate communication between spoken and signed languages for and between deaf or hard of hearing students and faculty, staff and other students. Employees in this title interpret a broad range of content areas in the liberal arts, technical, and other curricula offered by the various CUNY colleges. Employees may perform other related duties, and on occasion may provide similar services to college employees. The following are typical assignments in the two levels of this title, and are conducted in spoken English and/or American Sign Language.

Examples of Typical Tasks

Level 1:


• Interprets from spoken language to signed or visual language; also, interprets in the reverse direction.
• Facilitates communication in classroom settings that require routine interaction between student and teacher, e.g. lecture hall, basic or core courses, minor courses, etc.
• Facilitates communication in classroom settings that deal with predictable levels of subject matter complexity, e.g. orientation meetings, remedial courses, basic or core courses, minor or major courses, etc.
• Interprets in group sessions such as laboratory, tutorial, seminar and the like.
• Facilitates communications in group sessions where there are varying ratios of deaf/hard of hearing students to hearing participants.
• Interprets for one student; for several students; for several students each using a different communication modality.



Level 2:
In addition to performing those tasks indicated in Level 1 examples (above), persons in Level 2 will be assigned to tasks involving more complex services such as, but not limited to, the tasks immediately following:


• Interprets individual sessions where confidentiality and discretion are necessary such as teacher/student conferences, academic advisement, registration and admission activities, financial aid applications and similar.
• Interprets in activities involving public platform communications such as college-wide assemblies, student presentations, guest speakers and performers, academic conferences, campus events of cultural, business and political nature and the like.
• Facilitates communication in classroom or academic settings that deal with unpredictable levels of subject matter complexity or that require specialized or complicated interaction between student and teacher, e.g. majors courses, honors courses, colloquia, symposia and similar.
• Interprets in situations requiring inordinate complexity and precision of language such as senior levels of mathematics, upper branches of physical science, poetry, etc.
• Interprets in classroom settings where there is rapid and frequent interaction, interruption, contradiction and alternation of speakers and languages.
• Interprets in classroom settings for multiple, varying numbers of hearing-impaired students and/or hearing persons with varying language modalities.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

 


Minimum Requirements:
Level 1


1. All persons must possess the high school diploma, or equivalent, and must have fluency in both English and American Sign Language; ALSO
2. All persons must have successfully completed a Basic Interpreter Training Program at a recognized institution, or have passed the Interpreter Examination administered by New York State Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities, or equivalent.



Level 2


1. All persons must meet the Qualification Requirements for Level 1 (above). In addition, persons must be in possession of a certification of proficiency issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) (www.rid.org ); or a certification of proficiency issued by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) (www.nad.orq).



Persons will be placed in various work assignments depending upon the needs of service and their level of demonstrated competence. Persons who have attained the baccalaureate degree may be placed in work assignments of a more complex nature.

Preferred Qualifications:
At least 3 years experience interpreting and transliterating for deaf and hard of hearing students at the post secondary level preferred. Knowledge and willingness to abide by the professional code of ethics of interpreters as deemed by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. and/or by the National Association of the Deaf, Inc. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Microbiology: Grow cultures of microorganisms for each of fourteen laboratory sections per week; check cultures of each strain as to the purity and specified morphological and physiological properties; distribute these cultures in their test tubes to each of the students; maintain pure and viable stock cultures of all strains used in the course; prepare media, reagents, etc. for experiments to be carried out; setup, check out and clean the laboratory for the week’s experiments of 1, 2 or 3 sections per day.

Cell Fine Structure: Conduct pilot runs of new experiments in order to ascertain their feasibility and work out techniques for the preparation of the required materials; conduct demonstrations and assist students with manipulations during laboratory sessions; order media and chemicals for courses well in advance of the start of classes; know how to use and care for standard audio visual equipment; become familiar with the use of computer terminals; acquire new skills and techniques related to course work; maintain microscopes so they are in excellent working order; assist in the operation of all labs in order to maintain the safety and well being of all students; assist lab instructors during the operation of the labs in order to maintain the appropriate level of quality teaching.

POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

 

 

Under supervision operates motor vehicles such as passenger cars, ambulates, vans, hearses, trucks, wreckers, forklifts, tractor-trailer trucks and sign-erecting trucks; in a small garage, may dispatch personnel, motor vehicles and equipment; performs related work. Employees in this title may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, Saturdays and holidays.

General Work Tasks

• May drive a truck carrying employees, students and material to and from work locations.

• May act as a chauffeur to an official.

• Checks the tires, oil and fuel of the vehicle, replenishes fluids as needed and checks the vehicle to see that lights, horn and brakes appear to be operating properly.

• Reports any noticeable mechanical defects in the vehicle.

• Cleans the windows, interior and exterior of the vehicle.

• Changes tires or wheels.

• Assists in loading and unloading of materials, equipment and passengers.

• Reports any accidents in which the vehicle may have been involved.

• Operates motor equipment mounted on or transported by the vehicle.

• Watches for traffic hazards while labor force is engaged in making repairs.

• Transports collectors and cases of coin boxes to and from collection areas.

• Is responsible for tools, supplies, materials and equipment carried in or on the assigned vehicle.

License Requirements


A. Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment.
B. For appointment to certain positions in some agencies, possession of a Class A, B or C Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York, or a combination of these licenses or possession of a valid New York State Learner's Permit for a Class A, B or C Commercial Driver License, may be required. This class of positions provides various services to disabled students. There are two assignment levels within this class. The following are typical tasks within this class of positions. Employees may perform other related duties for the purpose of providing support services to disabled students. Depending upon the needs of service, the duties of this position may require the use of one’s own automobile in the performance of official duties; moreover, these duties may be performed on campus or at the student’s home. Positions report to the College Director of Services for Students With Disabilities, or equivalent. Upon application to the University Personnel Director, a college may utilize this title for persons who are to provide similar services to disabled employees.

Level 2 - Examples of typical tasks:

• Provide academic advising for students in transition and those in need of temporary accommodations.

• Provide academic advisement to students during pre registration and registration period.

• Participate in Advisory program activities, including academic and personal enrichment workshops and conferences.

• Enroll new students who request services from the Office of AccessABILITY and determine their accommodations based on their documentation.

• Service a caseload of students already receiving services/support through the Office of AccessABILITY.

• Counsel and advocate based on students’ documentation.

• Plan and conduct inter and intra college workshops, to distribute information about the program services.

• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions.

• Provide mediation and work as a liaison between the staff, faculty and students.

• Collaborate with other program counselors and coordinators in the design and implementation of in-service training programs for tutors, proctors, readers and academic assistants.

• Attend intra and inter departmental meetings.

• Maintain files for follow up and reporting purposes.

• Maintain and provide reports to the program Director as requested.

Minimum Requirements:

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education and four years of related work experience OR

Education and/or work experience that is equivalent to the above.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced coursework or degree in Psychology, Disabilities, Counseling, and/or Social Work or a related field with two+ years of experience in Student Services or higher education is a preferred.
